Gear1-Convection is a visual application designed for touch-based interaction. Unlike traditional calculators, input using slider controls gives instant feedback to changing parameters. This provides an instant sensitivity analysis to determine which parameters are the most important.
This application is comprised of three natural convection and three forced convection calculators. All calculators automatically look up the various properties of air as the air temperature varies. The calculators automatically switch computing algorithms as the air flow changes between laminar and turbulent.
Input consists of the geometry of the system and its temperature, along with the ambient air temperature. In the case of forced convection, air velocity is also specified. If more precision is required than provided by the slider controls, text fields can be used to input data.
In addition to seeing the convective coefficient and heat transfer rate change instantly, here are other important factors that are also updated constantly:
